Don't Buy the Bond( Fabric/Leather Protection)

This is probably the most important thing that Rooms To Go sells from a management perspective. Salespeople have to sell it on roughly 95% of every piece of fabric or leather they sell or they get fired. Management won't admit to this but they literally won't sell you the furniture if you don't buy the "bond" as they call it. Their yearly bonuses depend largely on this one thing. So they walk hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for this one add on. Salespeople will let you "walk" if you don't buy it. They are willing to lose their commission to keep their percentage in the near perfect category so they won't be punished by having to go to "school" early on a Saturday that they have to work 12 to 13 hours or ultimately lose their jobs. I have heard management tell salespeople to get rid of the customer if they are not willing to buy it.

Is it worth the extra $200 bucks?

Depends....I have seen the "bond" applied to the furniture in the warehouse. "Bond" is a very strong word for what they do. An employee uses a wand to lightly mist the furniture, most of it probably evaporates before ever touching a sofa. Yet I have heard salespeople say that this is like having a Teflon coating on your furniture against stains. If you are wanting this to protect against stains it's worthless in my opinion.

However....If you ever have any problems with your furniture, even if it is covered by the standard one year warranty. Don't bother calling the store if you did not buy the protection. Because when the salesperson goes to the manager to see about fixing whatever problem you have..product, delivery, or otherwise. The first question the manager asks the salesperson is not what has to be done to rectify the situation, it's "did they buy the juice?" if not, call the 800 number and deal with customer service, which the manager knows is not at all customer service(but that is for another post)
So if you want to buy this insurance policy so you won't be shoveled along the bureaucracy which is Rooms to Go customer service. Go ahead.

As for the leather protection, everything applies except they do nothing to "bond" the leather, all you are buying is a lifetime supply of leather conditioner. Which I can almost guarantee unless you condition your sofa set every day you will not spend $200 on leather conditioner in your lifetime.

  3. I attempted to refuse this today and actually pulled up your post. I told the salesperson no thank you and before checking out the manager came over. She was very very aggressive with pushing this "bond". I told her no thank you too. The salesperson and manager excused themselves and returned saying they would split the cost of the "bond". I told them I needed time to think about it. I returned to the salesperson and politely declined. The salesperson finally put the sale through. If they're willing to drop the price in half immediately it tells me the product is crap. This was for a blended leather set. This was such a major disappointment and hassle that I won't go through again. We are going to keep looking and cancel the order because of the sales tactic.

  4. i bought a Leather sofa set from rooms to go about 3 years ago and about 2 years in started pealing. The furniture was leather and you can see the leather hide underneath, but this thin rubbery like top coating was pealing off by the FOOT. We now have slip covers to cover it. Of course we did not by the protection. Called the the store and spoke to the manager and got no help. Spoke with a salesperson, to hopefully get some advise on how to get the issue resolved and he proceeded to tell me about a sofa he has had for 15yrs just because he used the protection coating. I asked the salesperson, "how can you sale me a product that you know will falter or tears up unless I buy your quote, unquote protection." Got not answer to this question. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!

    1. Tony, the peeling has nothing to do wilt their bond. 2 to 3 years ago, they had one of their manufacturers not use enough heat on their bonded leather. And even though Rooms to Go is not at fault, they are still willing to replace the merchandise. But only if you buy the bond.
What people don't realize is that the bond is also insurance for your merchandise. And the bond really works and very well.
I bought my furniture from the 9 years ago from them, with the bond, and it looks spanking new! I made the error of buying the matching ottoman, a few yeqrs after and refused to get the bond. It is much harder to clean.
The bond is totally worth it.

    2. If it's worth it and if Rooms to Go is so insistent that 95% of their merchandise sold must have it, then they should just apply it at adjust the price. I wasted 2 hours today with a salesman who did nothing but sell me stories to try to be my friend and push the bond.

I ended up just ordering what I wanted online while the salesman was telling me another story. I did everything I needed him to do in 3 minutes on my phone, after wasting 2 hours chatting with the guy.

    3. All you did is waste his time cuz he gets payed 100% commission all he tried to do is sell you a product you could've said no and still bought it and at least not waste all his time

    4. Well said all you are doing is waisting someones time and you don't know if they have a family too feed it's not easy working a job that is 100% commission.

  6. I am sorry that I bought furniture in that store. I too had a problem with the spray protective finish. My chairs are a mess. I also did not get my order filled on time. A table was delivered with a piece missing and I am still waiting for it!!!!!!!
Do yourself a favor and go to Haverty or some other place. Rooms To Go is such a disappointment.

  7. That bond has to be the greatest thing ever invented. Love it!
I bought my furniture from Rooms to Go a few years back, with the bond, and water, juice and dirt either bead off or easily cleaned.
I made the mistake of getting a matching recliner a month later, but without it. It looks yellow and liquids get absorbed and is harder to clean.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET THE BOND. IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT!

    1. IF they remember to apply it.

Just bought a sofa from RTG that was delivered today that should have the protector on it. I decided to do a little water test in certain places. While the water beads nicely off the pillows, it just soaks right through the sofa. I doubt the protector, or enough of it, was even applied and I'll be calling customer service tomorrow.

  8. I too purchased the "BOND" when I purchased my 3 piece living room set. Upon delivery I asked the delivery folks if the bond had been applied because I noticed the factory plastic was still on the furniture as well as the moving blankets and shrink wrap. They said if its on the ticket then it should have been applied. After about 8 months the first accidental spill finally happened. Guess what it soaked right through, no beading as it should have done if applied correctly. I contacted customer service "WHAT A JOKE" It should be 1-800 we are not going to help you or stand behind our product or services. After speaking with them twice they sent a tech out to verify if the "bond" had been applied or not. The tech could not find a "sticker" on any of the three pieces and he said it should be a sticker applied once the furniture is treated. After that they wanted to come and apply the bond to the furniture. I told them I wanted new furniture with the bond applied prior to delivery like I had paid for to begin with. They flat out refused. The customer service manager as she claimed to be even told me that the spills on my sofa were between me and my sofa and I should not spill things on it. After arguing with them several times I finally filed a claim with the BBB. RTG finally agreed to replace the furniture but refused to apply the bond and issued a full refund for the price I had paid for the bond to begin with. Of course that was after several messages through the BBB.

I also contacted the CEO of Forcefield protectant and he is very nice and actually responds personally to emails and phone calls. RTG is mis representing this bond quite a bit. You are better off to buy the furniture then buy the Forcefield protectant and cleaner directly from Forcefield. Its just $15 per spray bottle from them and the cleaner is $20 if I remember correctly. Even if it takes 1 bottle per piece that is only $45 to protect all three pieces vs $180 that RTG charges and never even applies it as they should.

I am not sure I will ever shop with RTG again after the experience that i have had. RTG is the issue with the Bond not the Forcefield product. If they applied it as they should it would work wonderfully.

    1. Forcefield protectant

This is the information I was looking for.

Do this yourself people! Skip the hassle, use the store to test what you want, and then order it online and seal it yourself! The option to get the seal is not even available when you order online. It's simply a gimmick they push in the store!

      Delete
    2. The option for the treatment is available on the website...you just didn't read. You can also refuse it at the time of purchase...unless your scared to say no.
And when you treat it yourself how much is it worth to you for unlimited spot cleaning that it comes with at the store?

And will you replace it when it fails?

It is true that it is a category that is pushed...but salespeople won't get fired for missing it.

Nextly, you should not go in to waste someone's time like you suggested because your lacking confidence.

If you don't want something...don't buy it. Simple as that.

      Delete
    3. Rooms to Go will NOT replace your furniture if the tech comes out and cannot clean the FOOD or Beverage stain. They MIGHT send a new seat cover or something. Be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks or more. Also, they will only come out for food and beverage stains...anything else your salesperson told you is a lie. This company is sneaky. Read all of your paperwork ASAP, and be ready to cancel your order within 48 hours so that you can get a full refund. Not just 80 percent.

Bought a leather sofa & accent chairs & wooden dinnette set. Oh, what a Nitemare. I dont know if RTG furniture is made in China (cheap) or just laying around the heated warehouse to rotten. Everything was broken or damaged upon delivery. Listen, RTG has a good marketing ads and nice showrooms...but thats all? You would find better quality Items at a flea market. Go to Ikea an No high blood pressure. Good luck Jeff Seaman CEO RTG...Seriously!!!! Your Cheap Furniture Sucks, thanks for wasting my time and money.

  13. This first week of May 2016, I bought a Leather sectional from RTG in Wellington, FL. The salesman DID push the "PROTECTION PACKAGE", I declined, then at the point of sale, he offered a $100 gift card to be used toward a future purchase. I declined again, and heard nothing further about it. It was NOT a pushy sale, did NOT get a sales manager visit. I paid for the merchandise, and was done. ON THE OTHER HAND, I agree with the author of this blog relative to the value of this product. I don't spend money of these extras for the same same reason, I don;t buy those extended warranties they sell everywhere. Its nothing more then overpriced insurance. Granted, its usually great in the event you do have a failure, but I will take that "RISK" vs the likelihood of a defect actually occurring in the time frame that the protection or extended warranty covers, and save the money. Another reason I WONT buy this RTG protection is because I DID buy it once... and the application was exactly as the author explained. The installer waived a wand with barely any liquid coming out, then wiped the tiny amount of liquid with a dry cloth... not much coverage, and I noticed most of the liquid evaporated as he wiped the sofa down. When I challenged the application method, I was told the cloth was "impregnated" with the protection liquid... yeah, right. Needles to say, I'll buy my own protection and maintain the leather myself. THis was a waste of money, I will NOT do again.

  16. I bought the fabric protection but only because I was financing $5000 worth of furniture so the difference in payment was like $0.15/month, and they said if I call in for warranty claims I'll probably get denied if I rejected the protection. Well it worked fine enough for about 6-8 months, but after that it begins to wear off. After a year it was like it had never been applied. You can call RTG and someone will come out and reapply it, but it's only temporary.

  17. Rooms to go actually talked me out of spending $2,200 at their store today. They were very busy when we visited, so we spent almost an hour in the store browsing furniture and crunching numbers. We found a set we loved, did the math to make sure we could afford it, and then found a salesman to ask him to process the order.

I explained to the salesman that we had a very specific budget and had already decided on exactly what we wanted. BUT, what should have been a 5 minute interaction took almost an hour because the salesman simply would not process the order that we had requested.

He forced personal stories about his grand kids on us and engaged our kids in conversation more than he did us. He was intentionally being a nuisance and every time I brought up actually buying the set we wanted, he would go into an anecdotal story about how his grand-kids tear up his house and how he wouldn't be where he was today without the protective seal on his furniture.

After an hour of this guy wasting my time, I pulled out my phone and processed the purchase and scheduled delivery on the website.

Don't waste your time dealing with the salesmen in the store, unless you need them to help you find something. You can do the part of their job that entails actually purchasing the items you want on the website, in minutes.

I hate Rooms to Go for wasting my time today.

  18. Thank you for the information, it was very helpful. I just purchased a leather coach set and too was pressured to purchase the "Bond" (protective coating). After reading all the above comments I decided to let them treat the leather and I'll inspect it upon delivery. I've had the sales person write on my contract, that if I'm not satisfied with the treatment that they will apply a additional coat in my home so I can see if it's done to my likings.

I'll update this blog and let everyone know. Thanks again for the insight !!!

  21. Hi,
We starting writing to Rooms to go early this year. We purchased a "leather" sectional about 6 years ago. We barely use the sofa because it is in the living room. early this year started peeling. we contacted rooms to go and they said that they cannot do a thing because the guarantee is only for 1 year. Real leather can last a lifetime. This furniture wasn't cheap... we do not have the money to purchase new furniture... I wish I could share the picture so you can see how our living rooms looks like :( I am resending another email today

  22. I had the same problem. I sent an email to showus.com with the receipt number in the subject line and three pictures max each email. They are returning the furniture and issuing a store credit. We will have to pay the difference of a new set, pay for delivery and purchase the bond. Better than nothing.

  25. Rooms To Go is popular because they sell attractive looking furniture at a modest price, the tradeoff is it's cheaper priced because it's cheaper made. We bought the Van Buren leather sectional along with the $190 "Protection" and within the first year the brown color started rubbing off on all the edges where we sit. It's like the leather is just painted brown or something, in fact they sent a repairman out and that's exactly what he did, spray painted the spots where it was wearing off and then after the paint dried he hit it with some clear spray. A few months later the same problem happened and they agreed to replace the 5 worn pieces of the sectional. Now less than a year later it's happening again and they said they will replace it but we have to pay for delivery. My wife is all for it, but I have come to face reality and realize that Rooms To Go furniture is just cheap crap and no matter how many times they replace it there won't be a difference. They will not refund the purchase price which is what I want, so I have to learn how to spray paint the worn spots myself until we eventually buy a new couch. BTW, the delivery guys are paid by the piece for what they deliver and their goal is to get it off the truck and get the hell out of there ASAP and will tell you ANYTHING to get you to sign the paper. My suggestion is to get EVERYTHING in writing, every claim about how great the protectant is, every claim about how they will take care of a problem, if you see a defect make them aware of it and get a signature, etc. This is what you can expect when dealing with a large corporation like RTG.

They were going to call me back by Thursday to re-schedule delivery.

Now, Friday, I call THEM back and I am told the couch won't be available until FEBRUARY 24TH.

When we contacted them they said there was nothing they could or would do and sorry for any frustration this may cause. These couches should last 10 to fifteen years depending on usage but not this one. Rooms To Go is horrible to deal with and you will get no satisfaction. Highly recommend you buy elsewhere.
